Larry D. Schmelzel, age 83, New Plymouth, passed away at home Aug. 6, 2017. Larry was born March 28, 1934 to Marion and Dewey Schmelzel in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada.

After living in Nokomis, Saskatchewan, Canada and Kent, WA, Larry's family moved to the farm between Fruitland and New Plymouth, ID in 1943.

At age 17, Larry purchased the farm next to the home place, with help and encouragement from his close neighbor.

Larry D. Schmelzel, age 83, New Plymouth, passed away at home Aug. 6, 2017. Larry was born March 28, 1934 to Marion and Dewey Schmelzel in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada.

After living in Nokomis, Saskatchewan, Canada and Kent, WA, Larry's family moved to the farm between Fruitland and New Plymouth, ID in 1943.

At age 17, Larry purchased the farm next to the home place, with help and encouragement from his close neighbor.

Larry graduated from Fruitland High School in 1953. After high school, Larry was drafted, kicking and screaming, into the U.S. Army. Following his service he returned home to the farm where he spent the remainder of his life.

Larry married Rheta Joan Cooper McIntire on June 21, 1964, at that time Joan, along with her three sons, Duane, Dale and Barry, moved to the farm. To this union two daughters were born; Lorna Janelle and Tonya Danette. After many happy years together Joan passed away in August 2003.

Larry was fortunate to find a true friend and companion with whom he spent the remainder of his life when her married Merle Beebe on Dec. 10, 2003.

Larry's rows were always straight, the ditches clean and the machinery well oiled and serviced. He was a good neighbor, a great community member, a caring and loving husband and an amazing father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be missed!

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Dewey; his brother, Jack (John), and Joan.

Larry is survived by his wife, Merle; daughters, Lorna Cashin (Roy) and Tonya Davis (Paul); sons, Duane (Gayle), Dale (Penny) and Barry McIntire; sister, Loreen Weilmunster; nieces, Jamie Paulsen (Craig) and Wendy Cegnar; nephew, Jon Weilmunster (Dewey); numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as great nieces and nephews.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be offered to the Fruitland United Methodist Church, Fruitland FFA Chapter, Heart 'n Home Hospice, or a community or farm charity of your choice.

Services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 12th at the Fruitland United Methodist Church. A luncheon and ice cream social will follow at the Schmelzel family farm.
